Roam works on iPhones with iOS 27 or newer.

Does a VPN change your iPhone location?

No. A VPN changes the IP address your iPhone uses on the network. It does not change the GPS location. Maps, Find My and other apps that ask iOS for the location still get the real GPS place. Roam changes that GPS location. A VPN and Roam are different tools.

Roam is not affiliated with Apple.

What is the difference between an IP address and GPS?

The IP address is the number your connection presents to servers. A VPN replaces that number with one from the VPN server, so a site can think the traffic comes from the server's country. GPS is the position the iPhone measures and hands to apps through iOS. A VPN does not move that position.

IP addressChanges to the VPN server.Unchanged. Roam does not change your IP.
GPS location apps get from iOSUnchanged. The place you set in Roam.
Maps and Find MyStill the real place. The chosen place. Find My shows no simulated label.

Which apps use which location?

If an app asks iOS for your location, it gets the GPS location. Maps and Find My work that way. So do other apps that use the iOS location, including the ones covered in Life360, Snapchat, WhatsApp live location and Tinder, Bumble and Hinge. A website that never asks for GPS can still guess a country from the IP address. A VPN can affect that guess. It does not move the map dot.

How do you tell IP from GPS?

  1. Turn the VPN on and open a site that shows your IP country. That country can change.
  2. Open Apple Maps or Find My. The dot stays on the real GPS location.
  3. If an app should see another place, set that place in Roam. Roam changes the GPS location iOS reports, not the IP address.
