Stop sharing location without them knowing

People look this up when they want their real location to stay private, and they hope the other person will not notice. Start with the free options on the iPhone. You can stop sharing, hide your location from one person for a while, or turn location off more broadly. Each of those takes the live location off the map. The other person can see that you are no longer there. None of them keeps a normal pin moving, and none of them shows a different place. Showing a place you choose is a separate choice, covered further down.

The steps stay in general terms, without menu names that change between iOS versions. Apple's own guides are Share your location with iPhone and Find My and location sharing. The pause steps, with the Me tab, are in How to pause location on Find My.

Stop sharing your location

Stopping sharing is the built-in way to end a live location. You can stop it for everyone you share with, or for one person. When you want them to see you again, you turn sharing back on from the same place. Stopping with one person stops sharing with that person in the other apps too. You can also stop from Messages, in the conversation with that person. Your real location is no longer sent, and no other place is put in the gap.

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Stop sharing with everyone, or with one person.
  3. To share again later, turn sharing back on from the same place.

This is location sharing with people. It is not Find My for the device itself. That setting, in Settings, is how you find a lost iPhone. Turning it off means you cannot locate, lock or erase the phone if it is lost. Leave it on.

If your safety is at risk, Apple also offers Safety Check, which can stop location sharing quickly. Use that when the situation is about safety, not about a white lie on a map.

Deleting the Find My app does not stop sharing. Install Find My again, then stop sharing from there.

Hide your location, or turn it off

How to hide location on iPhone, with what the phone already has, is this section. On newer iOS versions, Find My also offers an option to hide your location from one person temporarily. It is not a different pin on the map, and it is not the same as stopping sharing for good. This page does not name that menu, because the label can differ by version.

Hiding is still an absence. For that person, your live location comes off the map for a while. Everyone else you share with can be unchanged, which is why people pick it when one person should not see them and the others may. It does not keep a normal moving location on their map while you are somewhere else. When you want them to see you again, turn sharing back on from the same place.

Turning location off is the broader switch. In Settings, the iPhone has a location setting that stops the phone providing a location to apps, not only to one person in Find My. Maps and other apps that ask where you are then stop receiving one. You still have not placed a stand-in pin for someone watching Find My. Turn it back on from the same setting when apps should know where the phone is again.

  1. Open Find My and select the person.
  2. Choose the option to hide your location temporarily, when your iOS version offers it.
  3. To turn location off for the iPhone more broadly, use the location setting in Settings.

What “without them knowing” can mean

When you stop sharing or hide your location, they no longer see your live location. Apple's guide says your location disappears from their Find My, Maps, Contacts and Messages. They can see that you are no longer there.

This site does not describe a separate alert from Apple. It does not claim that a notification is sent, and it does not claim that one is held back. What you can count on is the map. The live dot is gone. Someone who opens Find My to check on you can see the difference between a dot that is moving and a person who is no longer on the map.

You can't keep a normal live location on their map and hide the real one with Find My itself. Stopping sharing, or hiding your location for a while, takes your location off their map. Your real whereabouts stay private, because they are no longer shared. The absence is visible. Someone who had the dot a minute ago can see that it left. There is no frozen pin left behind, and no second pin in a city you picked. If the map should keep showing a place, that place has to be one you set, and they still see it.

Show a place you choose with Roam

Sometimes you still want Maps, Find My and the people you share with to see a place, just not the one you are actually in. Your real location stays with you. Their map still has a dot, so you have not vanished from it. That is the privacy this choice offers, and the limit of it. Be fair to people who rely on knowing where you are. Don't use a changed location to mislead someone or to commit fraud.

Roam is an iPhone app that changes the location for all apps at once. It needs no jailbreak and no computer. It needs iOS 27 or newer. It uses the location simulation Apple built into iOS for developers, so the location is simulated. In Find My, the other person sees the place you chose in Roam. No simulated label appears.

You install Roam with the iPhone's UDID and a personal install link. Roam is sold by BLOCC. A day is €4.99, a week is €9.99, a month is €14.99 and a year is €49.99. Teleport puts you in one place. Routes follow roads at a walking, cycling or driving pace. The joystick moves the pin by hand.

Games that check whether a location is simulated, including Pokémon GO, notice it. Roam does not work with Pokémon GO or those other games, and some games block accounts for a simulated location.

  1. On the iPhone you'll use, open the passes and choose a day, a week, a month or a year.
  2. Continue in Safari. It reads your iPhone's UDID, then you pay. Your personal install link arrives by e-mail.
  3. Install Roam from that link. When iOS asks, turn on Developer Mode in Settings › Privacy & Security › Developer Mode, then restart.
  4. Open Roam, search for a place or drop a pin, and tap Teleport.

Find My then shows that place. Keeping one fixed place, rather than moving it, is How to freeze location on iPhone. A comparison that stays on computer and platform is Best iPhone location changer.
