How to pause location on Find My
Find My has no button called Pause. Open Find My, use the Me tab to stop sharing with everyone, or select one person and turn off sharing with them. On newer iOS versions, Find My also offers an option to hide your location from one person temporarily. That takes your live location off their map. It does not keep a live location updating. If you would rather keep sharing and show a place you choose, that is a separate choice, covered further down.
The Find My steps below follow Apple's guides, Share your location with iPhone and Find My and location sharing.
Stop sharing your location with everyone
This is the pause for everyone at once. The people you share with stay on the list. Turn the same switch back on when you want them to see you again.
- Open the Find My app.
- Open the Me tab.
- Turn off sharing.
When you turn sharing back on, those people can see your location again.
This is location sharing. It is not Find My for the device itself. That setting, in Settings, is how you find a lost iPhone. Turning it off means you cannot locate, lock or erase the phone if it is lost. Leave it on.
If your safety is at risk, Apple also offers Safety Check, which can stop location sharing quickly.
Stop sharing with one person
Use this when everyone else may still see you, and one person should not. Stopping in one app stops sharing with that person in the others too.
- Open Find My.
- Select the person.
- Turn off sharing with them.
You can also stop from Messages: open the conversation with that person and turn off sharing there. They no longer see your live location.
Hide your location for a while
On newer iOS versions, Find My also offers an option to hide your location from one person temporarily. It is not a different pin on the map, and it is not the same as stopping sharing for good.
- Open Find My.
- Select the person.
- Choose the option to hide your location temporarily.
That takes your live location off their map for that person. It does not keep a normal moving location on their map while you are somewhere else. Turn sharing back on from the same place when you want them to see you again.
Whether they can see that you left, and what hiding does and does not do, is covered in Stop sharing location without them knowing.
What the other person sees
When you stop sharing or hide your location, they no longer see your live location. Apple's guide says your location disappears from their Find My, Maps, Contacts and Messages.
Turning sharing off for everyone is undone by turning it back on. Stopping with one person lasts until you share with them again. Hiding your location is the temporary option.
Deleting the Find My app does not stop sharing. Install Find My again, then stop sharing from there.
Show a different location instead
Pausing is the right choice when no location should be shared. Sometimes you still want Maps, Find My and the people you share with to see a place, just not the one you are actually in. That keeps your real location private. They still see a location: the one you chose. It is not a way to disappear from the map.
Be fair to people who rely on knowing where you are. Don't use a changed location to mislead someone or to commit fraud.
Roam changes the location your iPhone reports, without a jailbreak and without a computer. It needs iOS 27 or newer. It uses the location simulation Apple built into iOS for developers, so the location is simulated. In Find My, the other person sees the place you chose. No simulated label appears.
Games that check whether a location is simulated, including Pokémon GO, notice it. Roam does not work with Pokémon GO or those other games, and some games block accounts for a simulated location.
You install Roam with your iPhone's UDID and a personal install link, then pair on the iPhone. A day is €4.99, a week is €9.99, a month is €14.99 and a year is €49.99.
Keeping one fixed place on the map, or moving to another place, is covered in How to freeze location on iPhone. Other location changers, compared on computer and platform, are in Best iPhone location changer.
- On the iPhone you'll use, open the passes and choose a day, a week, a month or a year.
- Continue in Safari. It reads your iPhone's UDID, then you pay. Your personal install link arrives by e-mail.
- Install Roam from that link. When iOS asks, turn on Developer Mode in Settings › Privacy & Security › Developer Mode, then restart.
- Open Roam, search for a place or drop a pin, and tap Teleport.
Find My then shows that place. See the passes, or read how location sharing and Find My fit in. Questions go to support@roamlocation.com.
Questions
Can you pause your location on Find My?
Find My has no Pause button. Open Find My and turn off sharing from the Me tab for everyone, or select one person and turn off sharing with them. On newer iOS versions, Find My also lets you hide your location from one person for a while. None of these keeps a live location updating from the last place you were.
What does the other person see when I stop sharing?
They no longer see your live location. Apple's guide says your location disappears from their Find My, Maps, Contacts and Messages.
Can I pause and still look like I am sharing?
You can't keep a normal live location on their map and hide the real one with Find My itself. Stopping sharing, or hiding your location for a while, takes your location off their map. They can still see that you are no longer there. To show a place you choose instead of your real one, they still see that place.
Does pausing keep my last location on the map?
No. Turning off sharing stops the live update. It does not keep sharing a live location from the last place you were. A fixed place on the map, or a different place, is a separate choice from pausing.
Does Roam work with Pokémon GO?
No. Roam does not work with Pokémon GO or other games that check whether a location is simulated. Those games can notice it, and some block accounts.
